1. Angelo Mathews

From 2009 to 2017, Angelo Mathews participated in the IPL for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Pune Warriors India (PWI), and Delhi Capitals (DC). He may be an asset to any club given his expertise and all-around abilities. The veteran’s high base salary of INR 2 crores, however, may prevent him from finding a team.

His prolonged absence from the league and T20Is is another factor that reduces his selling potential. The Sri Lanka all-final rounder’s T20I appearance was on March 7, 2021. His participation in the Lanka Premier League won’t be sufficient to secure him an IPL contract.

Speaking of his opponents at the event, Jason Holder and Jimmy Neesham might be regarded as being better than him because they have both played a lot of T20 cricket over the past two years. He submitted his name for the 2019 mini-auction to play in the league, but no one chose him up. His basic price was INR 2 crores at the time as well.

2. Tom Latham

Tom Latham has worked with the New Zealand cricket squad for the past ten years, but he hasn’t yet been given the opportunity to participate in the IPL. He participated in the mega auction back in 2018, but no franchise expressed interest in him. He has waited four years and has signed up for the mini-auction in 2023 to try his luck once more.

It can be claimed that looking at his ODI statistics for his national team, he has solid numbers. However, given his T20I statistics, the 30-year-old New Zealand batsman might not be regarded as the ideal batter in the aforementioned format. In light of these circumstances, franchises could be reluctant to make financial commitments to Latham.

Since Phil Salt, Nicholas Pooran, and Heinrich Klaasen, some other popular wicketkeepers who have been playing in the shortest format for a while, have also signed up for the auction, the franchises might not pick him above them.

3. Shai Hope

Shai Hope, a West Indies wicketkeeper and hitter, will try to play in his first IPL game this season. But because of his lacklustre T20I batting performances for the Caribbean side, he might not appeal to franchise owners at the mini-auction. In 19 T20I appearances, the left-handed hitter has scored only 304 runs with two half-centuries and a pitiful average of 17.88.

He had some excellent bat knocks while representing Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Caribbean Premier League this year. Those innings, though, won’t give him the credibility to join any franchises in the IPL, which is considerably more competitive than the CPL.

The 29-year-old West Indies wicketkeeper will have fierce competition in the auction from other wicketkeepers as well. Phil Salt, Nicholas Pooran, Heinrich Klaasen, Litton Das, and Kusal Medis are all wicketkeeper-batters, therefore he might not be the franchises’ top choice.

4. Craig Overton

Craig Overton, an all-around player for England, has registered for the upcoming auction at his starting bid of INR 2 crores. He has some experience playing international cricket, having participated in 15 games for his country’s team, including both ODI and Test matches.

But given his high price tag, he might not find any takers at the mini-auction. The fact that the 28-year-old has yet to play in a T20I for England may serve as another excuse for the franchise owners to avoid him.

Despite a few respectable performances in England’s Vitality T20 Blast, the Englishman might not be sold at auction. The franchises would like to invest in seasoned and well-known all-rounders like Moises Henriques and Jason Holder at his base price.

5. D’Arcy Short

D’Arcy Short, an Australian cricketer, has registered his name for the next auction; his bid is worth INR 75 lakhs. As a member of the Rajasthan Royals (RR) for the 2018 IPL season, Short put up lackluster performances. The left-handed hitter only managed 115 runs and one wicket in seven games with the bat.

He performed poorly for the Australian squad in T20I matches played between 2018 and 2020 in international cricket as well. He failed to make an impression on the national squad to become a regular member with only 642 runs in 23 T20Is and a mediocre batting average of 30.57.

Given his performance in the cash-rich league and his international T20I statistics, it is almost certain that the teams will pass on him. However, the presence of Sikandar Raza and Shakib Al Hasan, two players who are more dependable for their all-around skills than he is, could potentially hurt his chances of being purchased at the auction.
