IPL 2022: Ravindra Jadeja to lead CSK, Dhoni will continue to represent the franchise “this season and beyond,” according to the franchise.
MS Dhoni, who has managed Chennai Super Kings since the first season of the event in 2008 – barring the two years when the franchise was suspended – revealed his decision to stand aside from the leadership position in the forthcoming IPL 2022.
On their website, the franchise confirmed the move, saying, “Dhoni will continue to represent Chennai Super Kings this season and beyond.”

Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan told ESPNcricinfo that Dhoni wanted the leadership “transition” to go well and that Jadeja was ready to take over for the franchise, which won its fourth IPL title last year. Dhoni made the announcement before the team went for training on Thursday, according to Viswanathan. The defending champions will play Kolkata Knight Riders in the tournament opener on March 26 at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.
“MS Dhoni was considering it,” Viswanathan explained. “He believed it was time to pass the captaincy to Jaddu [Jadeja]. He believes Jaddu is in the best shape of his career and that now is the best moment for him to lead CSK. What’s best for the franchise must be at the forefront of his mind.”
After Dhoni and Suresh Raina, Jadeja, who has been with the franchise since 2012, will be the third player to captain the Super Kings.
While Dhoni did not directly inform Viswanathan, he stated the decision was not unexpected because the franchise had discussed the issue before to the 2021 IPL and had told Jadeja at the time. “We had talked to him [Jadeja] before; there was even a proposition last year, and we thought he would be the greatest person to succeed MS.”
